Hurricane Sandy, Japan, Austria

kyokushin austria mountain camp

Osu. I am now in Goestling, Austria for IKO Camp organized by Austria Branch Chief Sensei Bekim Neziri. It is a charming village town about 300km from Vienna, high in the mountains.

Last week, I was in Japan for the All Japan Open, where one of our All American Open favorite fighters from Spain, Alejandro Navarro took the Championship title; congratulations, Osu!  Then we headed to the mountains for IKO annual Mitsumine Training Camp & Promotion Test which was followed by the first ever, IKO Intensive Training Course back in Ebisu Dojo in Tokyo. It was a great opportunity specifically for senior-ranking IKO Black Belts to fine-tune their curriculum at Honbu. You can read the report on Honbu’s website at: http://www.kyokushinkaikan.org/en/news/2012/11/mitsumine-training-camp-and-intensive-course-in-japan.html

In late October, I traveled to Moscow and North Carolina, and we had our Halloween Class at the NJ Dojo and our Fall Goodwill Tournament in Manhattan.

The next day, our area was hit by Hurricane Sandy.
It was a massive super-storm that brought tidal waves, flooding and fires. Homes and businesses were destroyed, and sadly, many people were killed. Downtown was flooded and the NY and NJ area Dojos were without electricity and closed down for a week. Some students were seriously affected and had to evacuate their homes. Some are still unable to return. The city is recovering slowly and everyone is pitching in to help as best we can.

KKNY is working with the NYCares organization and set up a “Coat Drive” to collect and provide winter coats for those who lost everything in the storm. It’s getting very cold now. If you can, please donate your clean, gently-used children’s and adults coats to the NYC or NJ Dojos as soon as possible.

Thank you for your support, Osu!

Reunion & Banff

I am back to NYC. I was in Reunion, French Island in Indian Ocean for the 1st International Children and Youth Championships. It was organized by local host Senpai Jean-Luc Vodapodagom at a city of St. Denis on Sep 29. Kancho Shokei Matsui, Shihan Kenny Uytenbogaardt, International Committee Representative and South African Branch Chief and I oversaw the event. Approximately 100 kids aged 6 to 17 from Reunion, South Africa, Seychelles and Mauritius participated. This was the 1st international event in Reunion and I hope Senpai Jean-Luc will further develop Reunion Kyokushin to the next level.

A scary incident occurred during the weekend. He is Ok now, but one of the South African Branch Chiefs was hit by a car at night in Reunion. He suffered 5 broken ribs and several cuts on his head, but he was rushed to the hospital and luckily is doing fine now. I was informed that he went back safely to his country. Cars drive on the left side of the street in South Africa, like in the UK and Japan, but cars drives on the right side in Reunion, as in France and the USA. Unfortunately, he looked only to one side before crossing the street, and it was very dark. I am glad he is Ok now, so I suggest you should look at both sides before crossing just in case.

I was back to NY for one night and then flew to Calgary for the IKO North American Black Belt Conference in Banff, Canada. This training camp was organized by Canadian Branch Chief, Shihan Stuart Corrigal and 90+ participants from 7 countries including Canada, USA, UK, Japan, Russia, Australia, and South Africa enjoyed 3-day-intensive camp on Oct 5, 6, and 7. Shihan Kenny Uytenbogaardt, who I was with in Reunion a few days ago, Shihan Koichi Kawabata, Kyoto Branch Chief and I led the training sessions. By the way, former NY Instructor, Sensei Slawek Was, is now living in Kyoto and regularly teaches at Shihan Kawabata’s Kyoto Branch. I was happy to hear Slawek doing a good job for Kyokushin in Japan.

One of the main events in Banff was the climb up Tunnel Mountain. It was a perfect day, and all participants made it to the top to see the great view, and enjoy fresh air and outdoor Kyokushin training on the top of the mountain.

So in the last two weekends, I went from the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere. Now back to NY and ready for Brown & Black belt class & judging clinic this Friday at midtown dojo.

At the end of September in NY, we had several students take Sho Dan Black Belt test. I am happy to watch student’s improvement over the years to get to this level. *Keep up your training NY Black Belts, and come to international camp and tournament abroad with me someday, Osu!

IKO Hungarian Summer Camp in Baja

I recently returned from the Hungarian Summer Camp in Baja from July 24th to 28th, organized by IKO Hungarian Branch Chief, Sensei Robert Kern. Approximately 50 Hungarian members from children to seniors from the southern Hungary participated.
All the training sessions were held outdoors by the Danube River, and covered basic to fighting technique. The camp concluded with IKO Dan & Kyu examination on Saturday.
I have been to Hungary several times this year and pleased to see how students have grown in such short time. I can see we will witness the success of Hungarian members in international circuit in the years to come. Osu!

All American Open prep

Osu. We are working hard for the 2012 All American Open. Last night we had volunteer staff meeting at the NY Dojo. Again our great core members are committed to helping out the event day and setting up and registration, as well as printing posters, flyers and t-shirt, photographing and videoing the matches, catering the Sayonara party and many, many other things to help event go smooth. We are lucky to have good group here at KKNY-NJ, thank you everyone for your support, Osu!

Some fighters have already arrived to NY and Kancho Matsui arrives today. This evening 6pm World Karate Magazine is scheduled to come to NY Dojo to cover tournament and interview members. They will cover tournament day as well.

2012 All American Open next week…

Osu – this spring has been very busy and now we are in the middle of tournament preparations for The 2012 All American Open International Karate Championships here in NYC next week.

I just returned from the European Weight Category Championships in Budpest and the All Japan Weight Category Championships in Osaka. Both events were well done and revealed great fighters. It seems that after last year’s 10th World Open Tournament, even more Kyokushin talent has risen around the world. Usually after the World Open, intenational competition is kind of quiet, but this year a lot of excellent events have already taken place and the 2012 year is barely half done.

I am excited about this year’s All American, especially because many fighters who won regional events very recently are coming to NY.  Osaka tournament was just last weekend, yet 3 Japan Team members -including 2 All Japan Champions- will come to All American and fight next weekend. ~Kyokushin is strong! Japan Day 2012 @ NYC’s Central Park

Osu! From Kyokushin Karate New York

Osu. Sunday May 13, KKNY was invited to perform on stage at the 5th annual “Japan Day” in Central Park. Japan Day was founded in 2007 to celebrate the food, culture and history of Japan in NY. This year marked 100years ago when Japan gifted the USA with Cherry Trees as a sign of goodwill and peace.
Kyokushin performance took place in the middle of the park at the “Bandshell”. We had about 35 adult and children representing KKNY-NJ. Students showed Kyokushin Basics, Ido Geiko, Kata, Kumite and Tameshiwari. Highlight was Sensei Keiji Ouchi family self-defense demo, Senpai Stan’s shihowari with baseball bat breaking, and Senpai Takao Miyashita’s breaking 200lbs of ice to finish.
The organizers were very happy and all Kyokushin NY members did a great job. Thanks to families and parents for your support, Osu!

IKO Russian Spring Camp

Kyokushin Ekaterinberg Camp

The IKO Russian Spring Camp was held in Ekaterinburg from May 3rd to 6th, organized by IKO Russia Branch Chief, Sensei Mikhail Medovshikov. 130 Russian members from children to seniors from the central Russian region. IKO Russian Branch Chiefs, Shihan Valentin Gedz, Sensei Igor Komarov and Sensei Vladimir Sobakar supported the camp led by guest Instructor, Shihan Katsuhito Gorai.
Ekaterinburg is the fouth-largest city in Russia, situated in the central region, and it is famous for being the internationally recognized border city that separates Europe and Asia.
The 4-day-intensive training covered all basics and kata including the classical Tekki 1~3, and concluded with IKO Dan and Kyu examination for all students. Russian Children are very enthusiastic and work out very hard. It is no wonder that Nikoleishiveli, the current World Champion is from Russia, and the youngest person in history to accomplish this goal at just 19yrs old. I believe Russian members future is very bright.
